The F/A-18 is an impressive 2-engine multi-role supersonic fighter jet and a attack aircraft for usage from aircraft carriers and conventional air bases. The primary tasks of the hornet are air superiority, fighter escort, suppression of enemy air defence, reconnaissance, forward air control (FAC) and day and night attack missions. The USA F/A-18 can be equipped with AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-7 Sparrow, AIM-120 AMRAAM, Harpoon, AGM-88 HARM, AGM-84 SLAM, SLAM-ER, AGM-65 Maverick missiles, AGM-154 Joint Stand-Off Weapon (JSOW), Joint Direct Attack Ammunitions (JDAM), several general purpose bombs, mines and rockets. The newest version (Super Hornet) has a improved AIM-9 missile and can also use laser guided paveway bombs.

The F/A-18 was developed to support the F-14 Tomcat aircraft onboard of United States Navy aircraft carriers. The hornet pilot can do air-to-air combats and air-to-surface combats by simply pushing a button in the cockpit.

F-16 Fighting Falcon (General Dynamics)

The F-16 is a from origin light-weight 1-engine fighter jet which is updated into a multi-role aircraft for operations world wide. There have been designed more than 110 variants which are in service in 24 countries. The F-16 is a relative cheap fighter jet but is capable for a large variety of missions with a large weapon arsenal. It is a attractive fighter jet for countries with a low /medium defence budget but also for the military super powers. The F-16 can be equipped with; air-to-air missiles like the AIM-9 Sidewinder and the AIM-120 AMRAAM, laser guided air-to-ground missiles like the AGM-65 Maverick, precision ammunition like the GBU-31 JDAM, general purpose bombs like Mk82 and Mk84, cruise missiles, advanced reconnaissance and targeting pods and external fuel tanks. F-15E Strike Eagle (McDonnell Douglas)

The American F-15E Strike Eagle from the United States air Force are designed for air-to-air combats and air-to-ground missions with precision ammunition. The F-15E can fight his way over long distances to destroy enemy ground targets and fight his way back safely.
The main difference with the F-16 is that the F-15E is much more expensive, twin-engine, larger, larger thrust-to-weight ratio and was build on the basis of the F-15A/C interceptor which was the most advanced us fighter jet before.

The F-15E is featured by a superior maneuverability and acceleration. The F-15 was the first American operational aircraft whose engines' thrust exceeded the plane's loaded weight, permitting it to accelerate, even while in vertical climb. Low-wing loading (the ratio of aircraft weight to its wing surface) is a vital factor in maneuverability and combined with the high thrust-to-weight ratio, it enables the aircraft to turn tightly without losing speed.

The American F-15A and C Eagle is an air-to-air fighter jet (for air-defence). The F-15 has been developed to penetrate enemy air defence and shoot down each other fighter jet. With his high maneuverability it can make turns without losing speed and is superior in air combat. The F-15 was for a long time an Americans important fighter jet in air-to-air combat. The US F-15's are called the "Golden Eagles". The F-15 will be partially replaced by the most modern fighter jet; the F-22 Raptor. The F-15 can only be armored with air-to-air missiles like the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM.

Difference with other fighter jets

During the exercise Cope India 04 on the Indian AFB Gwalior, six American F-15C from Elmendorf AFB fought against Indian fighter jets. The Indian Su-30K's were better than de American F-15's.

F-14 Tomcat Images

The F-14 was developed for: air-defence of aircraft carriers, fighter escort, tactical air reconnaissance and air-to-ground attack fighter. The F-14 Tomcat has been developed by the American company Northrop Grumman to replace the F-4 Phantom by the US Navy on the aircraft carriers.
The first aircraft F-14A (basic model) came into service in the 70ths with the United States Navy. The company has manufactured 632 F-14's for the US Navy.

The aircraft has a 20mm vulcan Gatling board-canon and can be equipped with: phoenix, sparrow and sidewinder air-to-air missiles and Mk80 series general purpose bombs, laser guided bombs and Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM). For the guided ammunition the Tomcat is equipped with the LANTERN targeting pod.

Electronics
The F-14D version has a Infrared Search and Track System (IRSTS) and a Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS). There have been modernized around the 400 F-14A tomcats to the F-14D standard. The F-14D version had some updates which includes: GEC Marconi Digital Flight Control System (DFCS) and after a update of the computer software the F-14 will also be able to carry Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air missiles (AIM-120 AMRAAM).

Iran
In the 70 years, Iran has bought 77 F-14A Tomcat fighter jets. These were used during the Iran-Iraq war. Iran used them also as a kind of mini-AWACS airplanes. Iraq used the Mirage F1-EQ fighter jets. These fighter jets were be able to fly beneath the radar range of the Iranian tomcats, then they could destroy the F-14's with air-to-air missiles.
About 1987 there were still 10 of the 77 F-14 Tomcats available for usage. This came due to the maintenance and that the US Government has made a ban of delivering weapons to Iran.
About 2000 there were maybe 20 F-14A Tomcats airworthy. 35 F-14's where stripped to spare parts.
Air Power experts are saying that the Iranian Air Force has no more than 7 piece F-14 Tomcats for use. Iran claims that it has F-14's equipped with I-Hawk air-to-air missiles.
Future
The American F-14's, are subdivided over 7 squadrons but will be slowly replaced by the new F/A-18E and F/A-18F Super Hornet.
